An Everyday Hero: Carmono Lane

Master Candidate, Educational Leadership
Minnesota State University, Mankato
Page Scholar 2010-present

“My accolades and accomplishments in athletics are what everyone focuses on, but I want to be known as someone who made a difference in a kid’s future.”

Growing up south of Chicago, Carmono Lane reflects, “I could have been a statistic. Thanks to people at the local community center who really cared, I got involved and stayed on track.” Carmono is now the first in his family to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. An All-American sprinter on the Track and Field team and Parks and Recreation major at Minnesota State University, Mankato, Carmono is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Education Leadership.

Carmono credits the Page Education Foundation for his interest in community service and youth development. “It was that spark that led to a big flame,” he says. For his Service to Children project, Carmono volunteered with Junior Achievement and the Mankato YWCA. Through this experience, he discovered a passion for helping middle school girls gain confidence and set goals for their future. This summer, he’s interning with the Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks department and piloting his own Ladies First curriculum with young girls in the community

Despite his young age, Carmono constantly considers his legacy. “I want to be remembered in Mankato for more than running track. My accolades and accomplishments in athletics are what everyone focuses on,” he says, “but I want to be known as someone who made a difference in a kid’s future.” Once he completes his graduate work, Carmono plans to open his own community center. Clearly, he will continue to have a positive influence on the next generation.
